- The journal is committed to publishing scholarship of the highest possible standards: published articles should adhere to the highest standards in terms of style, writing, and of course the originality of their research.
- Traditionally, the journal has served as a platform for publishing the research of SNU professors in English; although now it is open to anybody regardless of affiliation and status, research from within Korea is still strongly encouraged in order to aid the globalization of Korean studies. All research will however be reviewed equally, through the double-blind peer review process (see below).
- Although research from all fields within Korean Studies will be considered for publication, it should transcend the limits of its specialization: thus articles in, for example, sociology or linguistics that are only relevant to those fields (i.e., are too specialized in terms of their approach) will be rejected.
- Interdisciplinary research in particular is strongly encouraged.
- All research should also take into consideration studies from outside its own linguistic area. English-language manuscripts that do not cite crucial research in Korean (and vice versa) will not be considered.
- Innovative approaches or comparative approaches are highly encouraged; also, we encourage articles that critically reflect on the field.
- Given the relative paucity of research on pre-modern Korea, the journal would like to foster especially research on the pre-modern period.
- Although the preferred length of articles is 8,000-10,000 words, exceptions are allowed; if the subject matter warrants it, longer articles may be accepted.
